PLANNING TIPS

Have you ever made certain plans but not follow through? Do not worry, we have all been there. Many of us have the best of intentions to plan out our goals and plans. We sit down and plan to get something done and at the start, we are suuuuper motivated to do so. We may even write it in our planners or our journals WITH INK! ;-).

But then this thing called life happens, and we end up getting sidetracked. Sometimes your goals even get pushed aside so much that you forget about them entirely. Let me sum up some reasons why it could be so hard to stick to the plan:

You are not motivated or excited

You have a plan/goal that you need to stick with but you just can't get yourself motivated enough to follow through. This could be because your goal is not of your own choosing (like a business goal set by your manager for example). Maybe you are even dreading having to do something. We have all been there.

Fix tip: If you are not motivated or excited about your goal, there is probably something that is mentally blocking you. To fix it, develop a habit (we have been talking about habits in the other parts of this Goal-Setting series) and asking yourself if this is something you actually want to do. If it is: great, stick with it and complete it. If it is not, then do not write it down or make it a top priority goal.

You strive for perfection

There is nothing wrong with perfection. But, being a perfectionist can sometimes hold you back.

Fix tip: Wanting things to be just perfect can be a setup for failure. Imperfect is ok. The fact that you're working on your goal, is ok. To not do it perfectly, is ok. Getting it done is what matters.

Underestimating + timemanagement

We tend to underestimate how long certain goals and takes will take. Sometimes, this comes from being overconfident in our own abilities. Or because we have a lack of confidence or knowledge about certain aspects.

Fix tip: Try looking back at previous projects and truly look at how much time those have cost you. Then look at your new goal and calculate how much time that could consume, I always add in extra time just to be sure. That way I do not have to rush it and will have less stress because of that. If you don't give yourself enough time, it will only discourage you from completing it.

6 TIPS:

  • Only make it a goal if you are sure you want to follow through with it.
  • Take it seriously and keep the excitement going, keep yourself motivated.
  • Stay focused on the main objective, don't get sidetracked.
  • Do not let your mind play tricks on you into believing that you can't do it, you CAN do it!.
  • You can strive for perfection, but do not let it keep you from completing your goal.
  • Be honest with yourself and give yourself enough time to complete it, add in some extra time for some breathing room if you need it.

There are so many different things that can keep us from sticking with our goals. That's why it is so so so important that we stay motivated when we do make our goals and plans a priority.

Just keep your eye on the end goal, stay motivated & energized so that you can complete it.
